Alex Olsen

PhD Project Title
A Fully Automated Synthesis Machine for Optimising Selective Reactions

Alex graduated from Queen’s University Belfast in 2024 with a first-class Masters in Chemistry. Between his third and fourth year he completed a 12-month placement working in the ALMAC Group headquarters in Craigavon, being awarded the Almac McKervey Award for Excellence in Organic Chemistry. Within the Customs and Flow team Alex worked on flow chemistry projects from catalytic hydrogenation to electrochemical oxidations. During his final year project Alex worked in the James Group, investigating mechanochemical depolymerization for sustainable polymer chemistry. Alex’s PhD research is focused on utilising machine learning and flow chemistry on selective organic reactions. In his spare time Alex enjoys reading novels, listening to city pop and swimming.
