Mirela Johnson

Mirela graduated from Cardiff University with a Master’s Degree in Chemistry. During her third year, she undertook an industry placement at AstraZeneca, Macclesfield, where she worked as a member of the Pharmaceutical Sciences team testing drug stability and shelf life. Her student project at the company involved a study into the reproducibility and usefulness of a novel instrument designed to mimic injections into the subcutaneous layer of the skin. During her Master’s project, under the supervision of Professor Simon Pope, she designed and synthesised a series of naphthalimide-derived fluorescently labelled cholesterol derivatives for use in cellular bio-imaging studies.

Outside of academia, Mirela enjoys attempting new crafts, watching documentaries about space and trying to convince herself that she likes running.
