SUMMER SHOWCASE 2025
Our 2025 Summer Showcase brought together an inspiring mix of PhD researchers, academic experts, industry collaborators, and policy professionals to discuss innovative solutions to global sustainability issues.
Held at The Edge, University of Bath, the event was co-organised by the Bath Institute for Sustainability and Climate Change (ISCC) and the Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sustainable Chemical Technologies: A Systems Approach (CSCT).
This year’s Showcase was particularly significant, celebrating both the inaugural year of the ISCC and the official launch of the newly EPSRC-funded CSCT. Together, these initiatives aim to equip future scientists with the interdisciplinary tools needed to address the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
The partnership between ISCC and CSCT highlights the value of uniting experienced research leadership with new academic talent. While the ISCC offers strategic direction and a strong research foundation, the CSCT provides a systems-based training programme designed to develop PhD researchers into future leaders in sustainability and innovation.
Spotlighting thought leadership in sustainability
The programme featured three prominent keynote speakers, each underscoring the global impact and scope of sustainability research.

Professor
Walter Leitner
Professor Walter Leitner from the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Energy Conversion presented strategies for redesigning petrochemical processes using renewable energy and sustainable feedstocks to achieve net zero. He showcased adaptive catalytic systems, ferromagnetic nanomaterials for thermally challenging reactions, and novel tandem processes with renewable inputs.
Drawing on insights from Jane Goodall and Max Planck's emphasis on understanding before application, Professor Leitner urged researchers to harness their creativity in developing cleaner processes and better products for a sustainable future.

Professor
Silvia Gross
Professor Silvia Gross from the University of Padova challenged attendees to rethink chemistry's role in the circular economy. Drawing on her work in sustainable wet chemistry and critical raw materials recovery, her presentation highlighted practical applications from copper and phosphorus recovery to next-generation catalysis for energy conversion.

Professor
Jim Watson
Professor Jim Watson, Professor of Energy Policy at UCL, explored the evolving energy landscape and the crucial role of research in shaping policy decisions. His presentation on "Research, Evidence and UK Energy Policy" highlighted how academic insights can inform national energy strategies and support the UK's ambition to become a clean energy superpower.
Flash Presentations
Among the many highlights of the event, the contributions from our students stood out in a special way.
On Day 1, Cohort 24 delivered a series of 1-minute Flash Presentations – short, focused summaries of their PhD research. Behind each talk were weeks of preparation and training in public engagement, all aimed at making complex ideas clear and engaging.
Every student rose to the challenge with clarity and confidence. It was a real highlight, and a reminder that the Showcase is, at its core, about our students.
Industry innovation and entrepreneurship
The Industry Showcase presentations emphasised the vital role of industry partnerships in translating research into real-world impact.

Dr
Stefanie Federle
Dr Stefanie Federle, Chief Scientific Officer at Kelpi, presented the company's groundbreaking work in developing seaweed-based packaging materials that offer a sustainable alternative to traditional plastics.

Jeff Ive
Jeff Ive, Chief Technical Officer at Adaptavate, introduced their innovative building materials made from agricultural waste, demonstrating how circular economy principles can transform the construction industry.
Alumni Pathways: From Research to Real-World Change
Shining a spotlight on alumni career paths is a valuable way to show how research training can lead to real-world impact beyond academia.

Dr
Luke Williams
Dr Luke Williams, CSCT alumnus and Head of Research Programmes at The Carbon Technology Research Foundation, delivered an alumni presentation on forging a career in the liminal spaces. He shared insights on how researchers can navigate between academic research and practical application.
Ignite Talks
Building on the energy of the flash presentations, several students took on the Ignite Talk format – fast-paced presentations delivered alongside automatically advancing slides. These talks showcased the students’ ability to communicate clearly under pressure, while highlighting the innovative scope of their research.
Three Minute Thesis (3MT)
The 3MT competition challenged students to present their entire PhD in just three minutes, with only one slide and no jargon. It was a true test of clarity and confidence, demonstrating not only the depth of their knowledge but also the strength of their public engagement training.
Recognising excellence
The Showcase concluded with the presentation of several prestigious awards recognising outstanding research contributions.

Presented by Giovanna Laudisio, CEO of Naturbeads, the Janet Scott Prize was awarded to Babak Niyaziesfiyani for his innovative work integrating glucose fuel cells with power management systems.
Awarded by Tom Turner of Abel + Imray, Nicola Ceolotto received the prize for his research on wastewater-based epidemiology, showcasing how environmental monitoring can inform public health policy.
Awarded first prize for an outstanding poster, recognising the high quality and impact of research within the ISCC and CSCT PhD community.
Awarded second prize for an outstanding poster, recognising the high quality and impact of research within the ISCC and CSCT PhD community.
Anita Plumley was awarded third prize for an outstanding poster, recognising the high quality and impact of research within the ISCC and CSCT PhD community.
Driving a Sustainable Tomorrow
By combining advanced doctoral training, cutting-edge research, cross-sector collaboration, and global partnerships, the ISCC/CSCT alliance stands as a leading example of how universities can catalyse transformative change.
The 2025 Summer Showcase reaffirmed the value of interdisciplinary collaboration, bringing together expertise from the physical sciences, social sciences, and systems thinking to address complex sustainability challenges.
Together, ISCC and CSCT are cultivating a new generation of researchers equipped to work at the crossroads of science, policy, and real-world impact.
With the CSCT preparing scientists and engineers through its systems-focused approach to sustainable chemical technologies, and the ISCC providing robust academic leadership and research capacity, this partnership is setting the foundation for a more sustainable and resilient future.
