West of England Sustainable Technologies Scale-Up Programme – Construction Materials and Sustainability

Construction Materials and Sustainability

Due to increasing environmental concerns, the depletion of non-renewable resources used in manufacturing building materials, and the increasing costs of living, the construction sector is seeking a more sustainable future.

Join us as we discuss some of the principles of sustainable construction, including designing for disassembly and adaptability – the ability of a building’s material and components to be disassembled and reused, or rearranged, after the initial design life. We will also look at the greater use of natural materials, both mineral and bio-based, to offer opportunities for more affordable and sustainable materials and products.

We’ll be joined by Professor Pete Walker, Centre in Innovation Construction Materials, Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment, and Professor at the Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering at the University of Bath, who will give a keynote talk. Pete Walker has led many research projects developing innovation in environmentally friendly construction.

A panel discussion will follow where we’ll meet companies who are innovating with alternative sustainable materials or processes in construction.
